From the Volkswagen Group, the first assault is two-pronged: Porsche with the Model S-fighting Taycan and Audi with its E-Tron SUV.

The folks with the four rings have earned some well-justified criticism in the range department. As for the “why”—well, it gets complicated.

That said, the Jaguar i-Pace isn't much better, managing around 212 miles over varied roads in mild weather. (The stress of frequent charging can spur that degradation.). Audi compensates with the ability to charge at a rate of 150 kW, besting the Jag but not quite matching the Tesla's 200-kW maximum charging speed. The e-tron has a usable battery capacity of 83.6kWh, which is very close to the usable capacity of the I-Pace. Learn about the EQC here.

Second, we have no reason to doubt the EPA's 204-mile range figure for the E-Tron. Well, its battery pack is rated at 95 kW-hr, but the electronics only allow you to consume 83.6 kW-hr to protect the longevity of the drivetrain. Nor have we tried the new-for-2020 e-tron 50, with a smaller battery and claimed range of 186 miles. It was parked at a 100-kW station, so we plugged in at the 350-kW charger, which, hopefully, would give us an idea of whether this car can charge at 150 kW.
Our real-world highway journey covered a total of 306.7 miles averaging 48 mph, again with the climate control set at 70 degrees and some usage of the E-Tron's massaging front seat.

Here's what you need to know about electric car battery recycling. The Audi e-tron has the potential to charge very quickly indeed, as it's capable of charging at speeds of to 150kW – faster than the EQC's maximum capacity of 110kW and the I-Pace's top charging speed of 100kW.
