The motion picture stands at the pinnacle of all art forms in our culture – where millions will flock to see the latest blockbuster. For example, we do see the relationship—though brief—between Mattie and her father, and he seems like a nice enough guy to go and be avenged. Marshal Heck Thomas, who brought in some of the tou Funny, but I saw a commercial for audio books the other day, and I wondered about that….I have never used audio before, or kindle….guess I old school. In my mind, neither the 1969 or 2010 film versions of True Grit came close to the power of the Charles Portis novel. The climactic scene with Rooster and the “bandit chief” Ned Pepper is perfect in both. For instance, the opening murder of Mattie's father is portrayed differently in both movies. Similarly, the fate of the film's two oldest justice seekers, Rooster Cogburn and LaBeouf, are identical in both the 2010 movie and the book, but altered in the 1969 film. Cogburn (1969): I oughta paddle your rump! Nothing is really glorified about him, apart from maybe his gun slinging; it’s just more of a lost soul who tries to do what’s right. OK, OK! In all three cases, the story is launched by the brutal murder of honest man Frank Ross by the cowardly, thieving Tom Chaney. Given the harsh landscape, I can see why Hathaway chose Colorado. So although the same idea might make a great book, movie, and game, they’ll still need to be considerably different. Mattie (1969 version): When we locate Chaney, we can jump him in the same way, hit him on the head with sticks and knock him insensible. Currently, he is working to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication at Towson University. Anchored on Wayne's natural onscreen charisma, this first film version of True Grit is buoyed by a triumphant tone, one whose comedy is particularly punchy and whose heroics are particularly, well, heroic. The world of True Grit missed the Enlightenment. The only other movie v book that hasn’t disappointed is ‘ One Flew Over the Coockoos Nest’. The 2010 version “cheated” in it’s handling of LaBoef. In the Coen brothers’ version, this 14 year old, who has been ill in the boarding house, wakes up to La Boeuf SITTING IN HER ROOM WHILE SHE IS SLEEPING. Mattie Ross is a Christian woman who leaves civilization and for a few days explores the heart of darkness of the old west. NC (voiceover): I mean, who was that?! I loved both movies, but neither match the voice of the book. spin, you might be startled to see how close the movie really does come to the 1969 version. Oh, also “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” (Accompanying movie poster is shown) That was pretty awesome. The first movie, directed by Henry Hathaway and written by Marguerite Roberts, came out in 1969, only one year after the novel first hit shelves. What is especially odd is that I am a big fan of the Coen Brothers and I have never really been that impressed by Hathaway. Cogburn (2010): Well, if it ain’t loaded and cocked, it don’t shoot. His cringe-worthy performance almost drags down the movie, but the other performances float the boat so well you can overlook this easily. This isn't to say that the Coen Brothers completely abandoned the Hathaway production when making their film. LaBeouf (1969): I’m of a mind to give you five or six good licks with my belt! In one of the key scenes that’s more or less duplicated in the Coen brothers version (though to far less emotional effect), he talks about his past, including his wrecked marriage, and we see that he’s the sort of “noble” loner who’s really a broken-down, half-dead codger. In all other respects it was completely faithful. My aunt resides in Dardenell, in Yell county, and I have been there, and on Mount Magazine, Mount Nebo, and the Petite Jean. The Fargo directors' version of True Grit starred Bridges alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The original was played by Kim Darby. I think the more low the character is, the more in vain the murder is, which again makes for a different but much stronger story. As Cogburn, Mattie, and LaBeouf embark on this journey together, the audience receives Mattie's wonderings and observations through the narration – but at the same time, the sense of responsibility and protection manifesting themselves in both the US Marshal and the Texas Ranger are palpable, even if neither say it. But yes, the newer film was more grittier when it came to the violence and humor of the story. Wayne had done Rio Bravo (1959) and El Dorado (1966), which were basically two versions of the same story, with Howard Hawks, and the best role in each movie was the drunk. In the novel, she narrates the story from her old age, from the 1920s I think.
