TV Review: “Strange Angel” Drama series (10 episodes, 3 watched for review): CBS All Access, Thurs. I think the story line is good and the casting is fab. CBS All Access' Strange Angel is a Slow Burn Through Fascinating History Very well done, displayed visually, and the characters are so much fun to watch evolve into the historic points of what is now JPL and NASA! The show's writers chose to focus on a fairly non-descript period of Parsons life, but that's no excuse for how dull the episode was. The first three episodes essentially take the first few establishing scenes of a biopic film and swells them into three full hours that don’t, in fact, tell us much more than those original abbreviated scenes might have. It happens that some really GOOD movies and tv series suffer from low rating, or underappreciated rating. Unless you know and see that, this show will be a very long haul. For so many Americans living during the post-war days, when what we now know as the Baby Boomers were taking root, there was the life you dreamt about having and the one you actually had. Those circumstances, however, mean that his dreams have to remain exactly that, reveries which director David Lowery (also an Executive Producer) envisions through lurid red filters, drenching Jack’s wildest, comic book-influenced fantasies in a haze of unattainable distance and indecency. Kudos to the writers for their handling of the start of space travel, occultism, WWII, complex personalities and out and out madness so well. The one-hour premiere is available on CBS All Access beginning 6/14. It should mature nicely. The opening sequence got me completely, just the opening sequence. The story of Jack Parsons — the very real rocket scientist upon which “Strange Angel” is based — is a bizarre combination of ego and ambition that quite literally blew up in his face, when a chemical experiment exploded and killed him in 1952 when he was just 37 years old. Based on the real-life exploits of Jack Parsons, a 20th century rocket engineer, the series follows Parsons (Jack Reynor) through the early years of his work, when he was simply a working-class man with a dream. Three episodes screened for review. It's a vanishingly rare occurrence for the occult to crop up in popular entertainment outside of the horror genre, but "Strange Angel" is that rare breed. The three main characters are well played, the plot based on a true story has great potential, and the fantasy sequences are superb. Jack gets to chase a dream in which he has unflappable confidence, but Susan gets to worry about things like the two-month deficit on their mortgage, the constant mortal hazards of Jack’s work, or especially Ernest (Rupert Friend), their unusual, new next-door neighbor. Reynor feels like he’s doing his best Leonardo DiCaprio Gatsby as Jack tries to sell his smarts by way of charm, but both are ultimately unconvincing. They are likely best suited to read the funnies section in a newspaper and that's about it. Give it a chance. I love this show so much! The sequences inside Cal Tech, where Jack and his steadfast partner, Richard (Peter Mark Kendall), find themselves further developing their research, are similarly kindhearted, if broader; from the unorthodox grad students who join the cause to Rade Šerbedžija‘s skeptical professor, the series draws these scenes as a more accessible counterpoint to some of its more anguished observations about the zero-sum game of cultural repression. And apart from a couple glimpses at the alluring occult underbelly we know Jack will eventually succumb to and bizarre sidebars to an Orientalist comic he likes, the first few episodes of “Strange Angel” make the questionable choice of focusing on Jack’s constant frustration of being a capital g Genius who can’t get what he wants. | Bingeworthy.
