A Single-disc pair clutch dry power machine for a six-speed transmission with a drive shaft to bring power to the rear wheels. It’s lowered – but not nearly as low as the Concept R 18 – and the rider enjoys a more dynamic seating position, with less of a stretch to the higher bars. All rights reserved.
But in July 2012 Heinrich re-joined BMW Motorrad as Head of Design in the wake of the abrupt departure of his predecessor, David Robb. Instead of technology, the focus here is on simplification, authenticity, and transparency. Simply designated ‘Concept R 18 /2’, this completely new and markedly different interpretation of a dynamic performance cruiser shows the true versatility of the ‘big-boxer’ platform and gives fans a strong suggestion of what to look forward to when a series production cruiser from BMW Motorrad enters the market in 2020. Sitting higher than the Concept R 18, the /2 exudes an attitude that is not overly aggressive, but still sporty. A modified R nineT Racer bikini fairing sits on top of the raked forks and triples, while high-end Brembo brakes suggest stopping power worthy of this performance cruiser. Alan Cathcart talks about the latest project in the Concept R18 and speaks with designer Edgar Heinrich. There are only three metal surface treatments used – either blasted, painted or polished – to give a clean, authentic atmosphere for the bike, while the iconic Metzeler-branded RILLE tires have a custom-made tread pattern and special color treatment on the sidewalls. The R18’s wheels come with a centralized-linked radius, meaning (we guess) that the tires will have a tube. The builders – CUSTOM WORKS ZON and Revival Cycles – were each given free rein for their own interpretations of how a large-capacity boxer custom bike could look. While we continue to wait on the slow drip of official news on BMW‘s 1800cc cruisers, we’ve gotten our mitts on design filings for what appears to be the production models of the R18 in cruiser and bagger form. However, the app is fully modern. So absolutely no V-twin, for example. With the /2, the aim is to show the flexibility inherent in the original design concept, which allows for small changes to various body parts, without the main components (frame/tank/engine etc.) We’ll have to wait until next year to find out how close BMW’s first-gen Custom Cruisers will be to the Concept R18—but for sure its management won’t have wasted an opportunity like this to clinic one possible design solution to Villa d’Este onlookers and the rest of us around the world.
Concept R 18 roars to life. It’s a big engine, but I’m not afraid of this, because it won’t be a small bike, either. In the profile, Teardrop fuel tanks Follow the fall of the backbone, so the fly line flow directly down to the triangle, Swapna-Esque Swingarm which dates the overall suspension, or lack thereof, back to the mid-1930s. On the steering head, we find another factor that is long, the custom display of R 18 in a sweeping angle of 32.7 degrees. In the US, the MSRP will be $17,495.
“The biggest challenge in the design is to render … It’s a successful continuation of the story that leads us ever closer towards a genuine, series production cruiser in 2020.
We wanted to show them what we were doing, so we could say, “Don’t do that! The R18 is replete with stylish touches like the teardrop tank, polished rocker covers, cantilever suspension, open carbs and a tiny LED light nestled between the fork legs. Gone is the ‘floating‘ leather saddle from the Concept R 18, replaced with a one-and-a-half person chopper-style seat, lending the bike a more dynamic, hot-rod character. ". Number one, must it be a Boxer? Edgar Heinrich, 59, has spent most of his career working for the Bavarian-based company, with a first stint from 1986 to 2009. Aesthetically it’s very arresting visually—it immediately gets your attention. With the /2 the character is much more achievable, like a modified production bike. The engine badge bears the name of the Concept bike and the Solex dual carburetors (not EFI—at least on this concept bike) fitted, similar to those used in the late-’60s BMW 2002 sports sedan, reflect BMW’s sporting history, and add further to the bike’s authenticity. One option of the factory is an adaptive rotating light that throws lumens into the corner to enhance safety and confidence at night. And it’s also visually unique, which is always important when you’re trying to build a bike that doesn’t look like anyone else’s! For sure, it’s the continuation of a story that started with the R 5 Hommage. The base model will also be available in certain markets.
