The nuggets of wisdom it drops in your lap from what seems like every page can be applied in your every day life as well as in the stock market. The timeless classic delivers time and time again, Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2017. If there are two rules to investing and #1 is not to lose money and the #2 is to refer to rule #1, it seems I followed the rules by not losing money on a copy of this, nearly $40 for the annotated version I had in my queue. Livingston is a slightly-fictionalized version of the real stock market speculating legend: Jesse Livermore. The book was written in the first person by Edwin Lefevre, but he refers to the hero throughout as Larry Livingston, and it is widely recognized to be the autobiography of Jesse Livermore, to whom the book is dedicated. I often found myself reading the annotations more carefully than some of the narrative. It provided two insights that the original text did not. It's regrettable that this biography did not detail the end of Livermore's life, where he finally shot himself in the head, a deeply depressed and unhappy man. Plus its really great to read the story of one of the best traders of all time! Certainly one of the greatest traders the history has ever known. I just hope people don’t read Reminiscences, overestimate their own skill and prescience and chuck everything they own at a massive short on a ‘hunch’! This is the best book I have read so far on stock trading. Reminiscences is heavy on story and light on detail – but that is fine! Maybe this will make a better investor of me. All very admirable qualities! But…it has to be said that if you were to try and emulate his path, you’d be more likely to end up broke than a multi-millionaire…. My favourite all time book about trading. Good sound advice. In fact, I think understanding the basic theories of price action and when to buy the dip are more important than specific technical indicators (which tend to lose their value when people find out about them… see: A Random Walk Down Wall Street). There are literally chapters dedicated to explaining how Livingston decided to buy and sell stocks, based on the rate of change in the price of a stock. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the auto-biography of "Jesse Lauriston Livermore", a famous Wall Street speculator from 100 years ago. Livermore preached patience. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator has enriched thousands of lives (not to mention portfolios)! I highly recommend that you read this in conjunction with the biography of Jesse Livermore. Yeah, I know. Each page of this book should put in a frame and hang on your wall. He "confirms" that the key characteristics of successful trading have not changed -- ever. And as I was reading, it felt as I was talking to my pal who's just gone through the same things. Those without patience will lose money. For a guy like myself. Livermore describes many of the tactics that he would use to drive prices, either up or down, and most importantly, how he would use the tape to understand prices. Yet I found most of it entertaining, even funny. Just don’t expect to read this and come away with actionable trading advice beyond a few general chunks of wisdom. Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2019. A must read. Didn't find this book as insightful as the other books on Investing. When I started out trading and investing, everybody talked about “Price Action.” But after reading Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, I finally knew what it meant, and how to apply. The last third became a bit repetitive. I know, I know, that’s not the point of the book. Just don’t base your trading style on it! Reading this book, along with the actual writings of Livermore, it's easy to see how O'Neil was inspired by his work. Paper trading is educational but your emotions don't come into play until you have real money riding on "your stock picking wisdom" or lack thereof. Likely you are reading this review because someone you know and trust recommended the book to you. His life is full of tragedy and redemption. It turns out, quite a bit. The boy plunger. There are also a number of fun stories depicting the wild ride of investing in the markets before regulations really kicked in. An “absolutely-must-read-book” for any (aspiring) market professional. This is the danger of the book – Larry takes punt after punt and wins and loses and in the end (of the book) comes out a winner. And boom and bust and boom and bust….ad nauseum, it seems. And that’s why I want to recommend this book. There can't be because speculation is as old as the hills. Markets have matured and evolved now so the book also doesn't stand the test of time. Every other line would make so much sense to me. An interesting insight into the work of Jesse Livermore, one of the most prominent stock speculators of the early 20th century.
